The short answer

Total = price × (1 + rate). Canada charges 5% GST federally; some provinces add PST/QST on top, while others blend both into a single HST. Rates range from 5% (Alberta, territories) to 15% (NB, NL, PEI).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?

GST is the 5% federal Goods and Services Tax charged everywhere in Canada. PST (called RST in Manitoba and QST in Quebec) is a separate provincial tax charged on top. HST is a single blended tax that combines both into one rate, used in Ontario and Atlantic Canada.

Which province has the lowest sales tax?

Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon have the lowest at 5% — they charge only the federal GST with no provincial sales tax. The highest are New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island at 15% HST.

How do I calculate the price before tax?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. For a $113 total in Ontario at 13% HST, the pre-tax price is $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100. Switch this calculator to “Remove tax” to do it automatically.

Is Quebec's sales tax compounded?

Not anymore. Before 2013 the QST was applied on top of the GST-inclusive price. Since then both are calculated on the pre-tax amount, so Quebec's combined rate is a straight 5% + 9.975% = 14.975%.
