How much should you tip?
In Canada and the U.S., 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard at sit-down restaurants: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good, 20%+ for excellent. Counter service, takeout, and coffee shops carry no obligation, though 10% is a common gesture.
Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette says tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax isn't part of the service. Tipping on the post-tax total is also common and simply adds a little extra — on a $100 bill with 13% HST, the difference is only about $2 at a 15% tip.
How do you split a bill with a tip?
