American Express credit cards
American Express is unusual in running its own network and issuing its own cards. That vertical integration funds richer rewards, but acceptance in Canada is narrower than Visa or Mastercard, notably at some grocery chains. Many Canadians carry an Amex alongside a Visa or Mastercard for that reason.

Does the network actually matter?
Less than people think. Rewards, interest rates and fees are set by the issuing bank, not the network, and we cover that in Visa vs Mastercard. Where it does matter is acceptance, and that's mainly an Amex consideration in Canada. To find the card that actually pays you most, use the card finder.
