The short answer

A GIC locks a guaranteed rate for a fixed term. Longer terms and non-redeemable GICs pay more. Interest is fully taxable outside a registered account, so hold them in a TFSA where you can.

Work out what you'd earn

The GIC calculator gives your exact value at maturity and effective annual yield. Compare it against a high-interest savings account if you might need the money sooner, and check the rate is beating inflation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GIC?

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate is a deposit where you lock in a fixed interest rate for a set term. Your principal is guaranteed and CDIC-insured up to the limits, which makes GICs one of the lowest-risk places to hold money in Canada.

Are GICs a good investment right now?

They're a good place for money you know you won't need before the term ends: an emergency top-up, a down payment with a known date. They're a poor place for long-term growth, since returns rarely beat inflation by much after tax.

What is a cashable GIC?

One you can redeem before maturity, usually after a short waiting period, at a lower rate. Non-redeemable GICs pay more but lock your money away completely, so only use them for funds you're certain you won't need.

Are GICs taxed?

Interest is fully taxable as income outside a registered account, the least tax-efficient form of investment income. Holding a GIC inside a TFSA, RRSP or FHSA shelters it entirely.
