RRSP Contribution Limit (2026): $33,810, and Who Reaches It

The short answer

The 2026 RRSP dollar limit is $33,810. For most people it never applies, because the real limit is 18% of what you earned in 2025. You needed to earn $187,833 last year for the dollar limit to matter at all.

The number in the headlines every autumn is a ceiling, not an allowance. Two rules sit underneath it and they decide almost everyone's actual limit.

What is the RRSP contribution limit for 2026?

18% of your 2025 earned income, capped at $33,810, minus your pension adjustment, plus any room you did not use in earlier years.

Read that in order. The percentage comes first and the dollar cap only bites at the top. The pension adjustment then subtracts the value of any workplace pension benefit you earned, and carry-forward room is added back at the end. That last term is why a long-time saver's limit can be many times one year of income.

Our calculation: 18% of earned income, capped at the CRA's 2026 RRSP dollar limit of $33,810. Before any pension adjustment or carry-forward. Only the top row is constrained by the dollar limit.

This is the part worth internalising. At $100,000 of earned income your room is $18,000, which is $15,810 below the figure the news reported. The dollar limit is not the limit you face. Your income is.

How much do you have to earn to max out an RRSP?

$187,833 in 2025 earned income, which is the point where 18% first reaches $33,810.

A $100,000 earner against the 2026 dollar limit
$18,000Room from $100,000 of earned income$0$33,810
Room you generated$0+Headroom you did not$18,000+

Our calculation, 18% of $100,000 against the CRA's 2026 dollar limit of $33,810. Someone earning $100,000 generates 53% of the headline limit.

Two consequences follow. If you earn under $187,833, coverage built around the dollar limit is describing someone else's situation. And if you have carry-forward room, your usable limit can exceed $33,810 by a wide margin, because carry-forward is added after the cap rather than squeezed under it.

What is the RRSP limit for 2025 and 2027?

$32,490 for 2025 and $35,390 for 2027. The 2027 figure is already published.

The CRA sets these a year ahead through a deliberate lag: the money purchase limit for one year becomes the RRSP dollar limit for the next. The 2026 money purchase limit is $35,390, which is how the 2027 RRSP limit is known before 2026 has finished. Very little else in Canadian tax is announced this far in advance.

Where do you find your real number?

On your notice of assessment, or in CRA My Account. Nothing in this article beats that figure.

The formula gives you the shape, but only the CRA holds your pension adjustment and your accumulated carry-forward room. If the two disagree, the notice of assessment is right and your arithmetic is missing a term.

The $2,000 lifetime cushion is worth knowing before you cut it fine. You can exceed your limit by up to $2,000 across your lifetime without penalty, though that amount is not deductible. Above the cushion, the CRA charges 1% per month on the excess until it is withdrawn.

RRSP or TFSA first?

Different question, different article, but the limits alone tell you something.

The 2026 TFSA dollar limit is $7,000 and it is the same for everyone regardless of income. RRSP room is proportional to earnings, so the higher your income the more the RRSP dominates on room alone. Which account to fund first depends on the tax rate you face now against the one you expect later, which our guide to the three registered accounts works through.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RRSP contribution limit for 2026?

Your limit is 18% of the earned income you reported for 2025, up to a dollar limit of $33,810, minus any pension adjustment, plus unused room carried forward from earlier years. The $33,810 is a ceiling rather than an entitlement, and most contributors never reach it.

How much do you need to earn to max out an RRSP?

$187,833 of earned income in 2025 generates the full $33,810 of 2026 room, because the limit is 18% of income until the dollar cap takes over. Below that income, your own earnings set your limit and the headline figure never applies to you.

What was the RRSP limit in 2025?

$32,490. The 2026 limit of $33,810 is $1,320 higher. The 2027 limit is already known to be $35,390, because the CRA sets it a year in advance: the money purchase limit for one year becomes the RRSP dollar limit for the next.

Where can I find my exact RRSP deduction limit?

On your latest notice of assessment from the CRA, or in your CRA My Account. That figure already includes carry-forward room and any pension adjustment, so it is the only number that reflects your actual situation rather than the general formula.

Does unused RRSP room expire?

No. Unused contribution room carries forward indefinitely, which is why many people have far more room than one year of income would generate. This is a meaningful difference from a US 401(k), where an unused year is simply gone.

What is the penalty for over-contributing to an RRSP?

There is a $2,000 lifetime cushion you can exceed your limit by without penalty, though it is not deductible. Beyond that, the CRA charges 1% per month on the excess until you withdraw it, and you may have to file a T1-OVP return.

What is a pension adjustment and how does it reduce my room?

If you belong to a workplace pension or a deferred profit sharing plan, the value of the benefit you earned last year is reported as a pension adjustment and subtracted from your RRSP room. Members of generous defined benefit plans can end up with very little room.

When is the RRSP contribution deadline?

Contributions made in the first 60 days of the following calendar year can be deducted against the previous tax year. So a contribution made in the first 60 days of 2027 can be applied to your 2026 return, which is why the deadline lands in late winter rather than at year end.
